Business lessons we can learn from the stage

Although business and the theater can feel like two totally different arenas there are tremendous lessons we can draw from the theater to business today. In this blog we have compiled a few of the best business lessons we can learn from the stage. It’s not like we staged this, you know! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s jump right into some of our top business lessons we have learned from the stage! 1. Timing matters…a lot In theater, timing is essential to the success of a production. If timing is off it’s like the difference between a comedian telling a joke versus that one person you know. That’s the one, the one with the bad timing and they are the only one laughing at the end of the punchline. On stage, and in business timing is critical to success in our endeavors. 2. Preparation and rehearsal can’t be skipped One of the most common mistakes I see business people make is lack of preparation and rehearsal. In the theater, nobody dares to step onto stage without spending hours (usually hundreds) preparing for their scenes. Yet, in the business world it’s far too common for people to never spend any significant time preparing or rehearsing. Whether it’s for a product pitch or stepping in front of a room of people, preparation and rehearsal are must do’s for success in business. 3. The show must go on Life happens and we get it. In the theater, regardless of what happens, the show must go on! Actor sick, bring in the understudy. Lighting issues, missed cues, makeup snafus…they don’t matter individually relative to the production itself. Business is similar. We need to be resilient and recognize that obstacles are inevitable. It’s our mindset that matters here and it’s one of the most important lessons that we can take from the stage. Our business must go on. Want more lessons from the stage? Key elements in storytelling

Mastering the art of storytelling does not come naturally to many people. Thankfully there are some common elements that are universal in most good stories. These same elements can be incorporated to provide your business and brand with the ‘wow’ factor that you need to stand apart! Want to be the hero in your story and not the side story? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Le’ts jump right into what makes storytelling great and the elements you need to include in your story. What makes storytelling great? Storytelling allows us to create an emotional response in the people who are experiencing our story. It engages and captivates the audience by evoking emotions and touching on universal themes that everyone can identify with. A good story will resonate with people over time and never truly ages. Key Element #1: Conflict There is no good story without conflict. No matter how small, conflict is something all of us can appreciate and have gone through. Every story must have a conflict and the better the conflict the more engaging the story. Key Element #2: Resolution Not all conflicts are won but there are always resolutions. The resolution of a conflict provides insight and helps guide our future decisions. The wisdom in many stories is found in how the conflict was resolved. Key Element #3: Character In order for a story to hit, somebody has to place themselves in the shoes of the character. A great story will always have a character that people can relate to in some way and allows them to imagine themselves going through the conflict as the character themselves. Building out these elements in your story will help you engage with your audience in a more meaningful way and truly stand apart from the crowd! How do you tell stories? Supercharge retention by creating greater engagement in education

When we educate ourselves or someone else, one of the most critical indicators of success will be retention. How long and well do we keep the information we learned? Today, we recognize that higher levels of engagement directly correlate with increased retention and make our efforts at educating ourselves or others significantly more effective. In today’s blog we’ll explore how you can create greater engagement in education to drive incredible retention! You may want to engage with this! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Le’ts take a look at how we can create greater engagement in education. Offer Choice and Learning Pathways Much of education has been constructed by the hands of the teacher and often students are left with a model they must follow. By offering choice and learning pathways you can provide options to students on specific lessons they can learn within broader topics. Allowing for students to choose how they will demonstrate their knowledge also provides them with more excitement and enjoyment as they engage with the material. Emphasize Growth Mindsets Failure is ingrained in us as a bad thing. Yet some of the very best learning tends to be driven from failures and mistakes. Emphasizing a growth mindset means that we can and should embrace failure in what we do! Plan and build out exercises where failure is expected at least half the time and celebrated at the same level success is celebrated. Incorporate Active Learning There are many types of learning styles and rather than wax poetic on the various learning methods that are widely used and accepted we’ll instead focus our attention on active learning. Active learning can mean many things and typically will include, group projects, collaboration, interactive discussions and hands-on activities. By integrating this type of learning into traditional lesson planning we can greatly increase engagement across many different types of people and dramatically improve retention. By implementing some of the suggestions above you’ll create much greater engagement whether it’s in your own individual learning or any education you’re offering to others. The best benefit of creating more engagement is you will supercharge retention for anyone involved in the learning process! How do you increase engagement? Reflection – Do’s and Don’ts to get the best results!

Reflection allows us to enhance our decision making, gain clarity on our future goals and identify opportunities for improvement in our process and our behaviors. It’s a crucial skill to develop if your aim is to achieve the best possible results. But if you’re going to do it, you want to do it in a way that will help you achieve the very best results and returns for the time spent. In this blog we’ll discuss reflection and what you should do and should avoid to get the very best results. If you’re reflecting… we have a tool that may be useful! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! So what is reflection and what are the main do’s and don’ts you should be aware of? Reflection Reflection is a tool to help make more informed decisions in the future. To reflect we must carefully analyze and review our past decisions, experiences and behaviors and then review the outcomes to gain better insight and understanding. It’s a phenomenal tool to assist in continuous innovation and improvement. The Do’s of reflection Just like there are things we should do during reflection there are things we shouldn’t! Take care to avoid doing these three things! Self-criticism Although it’s easy to beat ourselves up over poor decisions or outcomes we didn’t want, it’s more self-sabotaging then effective during reflection. Avoid being overly critical and try to remain objective to get the most from your reflection. Rush Reflection takes time and we should be deliberate in the process. Rushing through reflection will seriously handicap the results you can expect from the exercise. Fall prey to confirmation bias A dangerous habit many people (especially those that are most introspective) fall into is confirmation bias. It’s common for us to want to cherry pick information that conforms to a result we want to have. Be as objective as possible during reflection to avoid this bias! Reflection is yet another skill that every professional and business owner should take time to refine. It will help inform better decisions in the future and force a state of improvement and innovation. What have your experiences with reflection been like? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! Communicating certainty – how setting expectations creates peace of mind

Trust and peace of mind are critical ingredients to any client or prospect relationship. Peace of mind may be the ultimate benefit of implementing strategies and solutions and we commonly find as a top response from any individuals we work with. In order to create peace of mind and fast track building out trust, setting expectations is top of the list of necessary skills to develop. Want more peace of mind? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Setting expectations will create peace of mind by communicating certainty. Here’s how! Reduced Anxiety Anxiety arises when we are unsure about the future. It’s almost like paying taxes on money you haven’t earned, yet many of us are guilty of having anxiety about the future. One of the easiest ways to reduce anxiety is to set crystal clear expectations. When communicated regularly these expectations will create certainty and reduce anxiety about the future. Less anxiety means happier prospects and clients with greater levels of trust! Enhanced Trust Speaking of trust, the speed in which we can develop and build trust is going to have a direct impact on our bottom line in our businesses. When we are able to set and meet expectations regularly we end up developing trust much more effectively than we otherwise would. Sure, getting things done will increase trust but only if it’s in line with the expectations that have been set. PS, there are always expectations regardless of whether you set them, so if you’re not, you are missing out on a serious opportunity to control the narrative of your relationship with clients and prospects and ensure peace of mind! Increased Critical Thinking Setting expectations facilitates greater collaboration, problem solving and most importantly critical thinking. By setting expectations we are mapping out our timeline for when and how we’re going to achieve our goals. The process of creating a plan and roadmap for our projects and services forces us to critically think about the problems and challenges we need to overcome. When we work on a team it allows all members to actively engage collaboratively to solve any problems. By setting clear expectations team members are able to all be on the same page and address challenges head on. This provides peace of mind to everyone involved in the process! Setting expectations allows us to communicate certainty and creates peace of mind for all parties involved including yourself and your team. It’s why we consider consistent expectation setting to be one of the most critical skills you can develop as a professional! Do you have any stories around great (or poor) expectation setting? Getting creative: Turning nothing into something

Our mindset is critical to our success in business especially when we are going to be faced with rejection, and an untold number of challenges throughout the journey. Often we look at challenges as obstacles, speedbumps, detours or outright rejection while we could be looking at them as opportunities, chances to pivot and avenues to refine. In order to take something negative and turn it positive, one of the best things we can do is to get creative. In this blog we’re going to discuss how we can work on getting creative so we can turn something into nothing. Speaking of creativity! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! What are the simplest tips out there to get more creative and turn nothing into something? Get past the symptom When we’re dealing with challenges, especially from our prospects and future clients, we don’t typically have the underlying issues stated up front. Instead, what we get is symptoms. Most people will do their best to solve a symptom, but if you do that you’re not necessarily helping the prospect and you’re definitely not helping yourself (unless your offer is simply to alleviate symptoms)! It is crucial to get past the symptom to figure out what is really going on. If you can do that and start to solve for that you will be well on your way to turning nothing into something! Sometimes this requires creative thinking and question asking. Don’t be afraid to get creative to get past the symptoms! Have the client address the impact Although we want to wave a magic wand for our clients it’s far more effective for them to wave the wand. Client’s take action much more quickly when they are the one that is reasoning through the why. The best way to accomplish this is to have a client fully share how fixing an underlying problem will impact their lives. They will end up moving themselves forward towards a solution. This means getting creative and not working off a script. Every individual situation is different and requires creative problem solving. Be transparent There is no reason to fit a square peg into a round hole. It just won’t work and will hurt more than it helps. By being transparent with people you help them understand that you’re coming from a place of partnership and guidance and not from a place of manipulation. When you incorporate all three of these tips it’s very easy to take nothing and turn it into something. By approaching prospect engagements in this way you’ll have provided more value than 99% of competitors in your respective industries. Regardless of whether you can provide a solution you have earned the right to ask for SOMETHING. What can you ask for? Be creative. Ask for referrals, reviews, testimonials…whatever you need. Remember, you earned it! How have you turned nothing into something? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! Help I’m self-sabotaging! Tips to eliminate self sabotage

Whether we admit it or not self sabotage is real and happens more frequently than we might estimate. What’s worse is the impact of self sabotage may be much greater than we can imagine. Self sabotage happens to the best of us whether it shows up as imposter syndrome or poor goal setting or any other ways (check our weekly newsletter). In this blog we’ll discuss how you can eliminate self sabotage if you’re aware that you’re doing it! Concerned about self sabotage? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Practice Self Care If you haven’t heard the Doc mention it before you should revisit any number of our podcasts in which the Doc discusses in detail the challenges most of us face around self-care. The truth is bleak, 90% of all hospital visits are stress related and easily avoidable if we simply practiced better self care. In today’s hustle culture it can be difficult to step back and take care of yourself but the health benefits both physically and mentally are enormous. Step one to help eliminate self sabotage? Take care of yourself! Meditate While there are many different types of meditation and a number of benefits that are derived from mindfulness, perhaps the greatest benefit we can receive today is being more present. Being present is something that we are becoming worse at, culturally, and while it’s impact is yet to be felt you can see it in the dynamics between people. Meditation can help improve our ability to be present and also help us identify when we’re being hyper-critical or getting stuck in self-defeating loops (yes these exist). Step two to help eliminate self sabotage? Get better at being present! Emphasize Self Compassion Empathy is a topic that has rapidly become popularized because of its importance in leadership, working in teams and in overall communication. Much of our empathy emphasis is on other people and yet we often fail to have empathy for ourselves. Self compassion isn’t nearly as popularized as empathy but it might be equally as important for many of us that are most critical of ourselves. If you wouldn’t critique a partner, friend, co-worker or employee as heavily as you critique yourself you might benefit from a little more self compassion. Step 3 to overcoming self sabotage? Give yourself a break! How do you deal with self sabotage? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! Language that moves people to take action

Getting clients to take action is one of the most difficult aspects of being a professional advisor or, truly, most businesses. Very few clients are at the point of action and decision making to begin with and so it’s incredibly important to speak to them in a way that is most effective. This, of course, is for your client’s benefit and your own. Any recommendations we make are client centric and it’s in our best interest to see our client’s best interests served. Normally, our stance is language isn’t as important as people often make it out to be, and we stand by that. However, there are occasions where our language choice is critical and we’re going to provide you with some of the language that will actually move people to action. Now is the moment! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! So what is some language we can use that will help people take action? Let’s dive right into motivational interviewing. What is motivational interviewing Motivational interviewing is a counseling method developed by clinical psychologists William R Miller and Stephen Rollnick. It’s a client-centered approach primarily used to help individuals overcome ambivalence or resistance to behavior change. Most people aren’t ready to take action and even when they approach the stage of decision making often struggle with conflict and want to avoid doing anything difficult. Motivational interviewing and the language within works to help people reduce internal conflict and overcome discomfort so they’ll take action! For the purpose of today we need to think of the acronym RULE! Resist the righting reflex: in other words, instead of using language that corrects other people use language that will reframe what someone has said you can understand what they meant or shift the conversation to another topic. Understand client motivations: Use language and ask questions that allow the client to explain their own motivation to change. They are chatting with you for a reason so they must have their reasons! Listen with empathy: Share that you understand your client is going through something. You don’t have to share in the feeling simply acknowledge that they are going through something and you’re doing pretty good here. Empower the client: Client’s will never take action if they don’t feel confident in the ability to take the action. Use language that empowers your clients to have confidence and self-efficacy. Everything above is built around reflective listening, asking open-ended questions and being empathetic. The best way to get a client to take action is to make sure they feel heard and help them understand with clarity why they need and want to make a change! How do you help your clients move into a take action stage? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! Future Predictors of Success: Empathy

It would be great to know what steps we needed to take for success. Life of course isn’t that predictable. There are characteristics that, if we emphasize, can help predict success and make success much more likely. We call these ‘predictors of success.’ One of our favorite predictors of future success is empathy. Empathy is a characteristic under the umbrella of emotional intelligence and is a critical characteristic involving relationships with others. As we like to say, business is all about working with people we like. Empathy is crucial to winning business and forming lasting relationships and is one of our top future predictors of success. Want to win more and lose less? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! What is Empathy? Empathy is a lot less complex than a lot of people make it out to be. Empathy is simply understanding that someone can have a different perspective and viewpoint than your own. Unlike most explanations, empathy does NOT have to be shared emotional connections. An understanding that there is a different perspective is enough. This understanding should be emotion free and judgment free. Why is empathy a future predictor of success in business? Empathy is a future predictor of success because empathy is the foundation of lasting and deep relationships. Nothing we do in life (business or personal) is done in a vacuum. Everything we do includes interactions with other people and empathy is an integral part of building relationships with others. By practicing empathy and having high emotional intelligence we can build relationships quicker, make them stronger and leverage people to do more than we ever could on our own. In this way empathy is a tremendous metric when gauging future success. Empathy can lead to greater leadership, team work, communication, connection with clients and constituents and much stronger marketing. Why is empathy a future predictor of success in our personal lives? Studies have shown that liberal arts majors are better prepared for a number of different jobs versus technical degrees such as Bachelors of Science. Why is this? One serious argument is that liberal arts majors are exposed to much more teaching around the human spirit, behavior and people skills like empathy than technical programs offer. Understanding other people is incredibly important. The human experience is varied and different and our ability to comprehend differences in upbringing, perspective and how people view the world will influence our ability to connect with others and move outside of our own world view. By developing empathy we are able to develop compassion and learn to care for others within our communities. Empathy is a great future predictor of success in personal relationships because it is a key ingredient to the recipe of relationships with many different types of people. A lot of us will keep busy but it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re being productive. Unfortunately, business can sneak up on us and before we know it, we have shifted from doing productive work to simply doing work and keeping busy. As a professional and entrepreneur, it’s critical that we make sure we are being productive. Here’s how you can tell the difference between being busy and being productive. This will be productive!
