Why we lose momentum and how to avoid it!

Sometimes business is hard. If it was always easy, everyone would be successful and life would be quite boring, we’re sure. Regardless, we have never met someone that wanted to lose steam or momentum in their business or towards their goals, and, while there’s a ton of advice on how to maintain momentum we found that it’s useful to understand why we lose momentum, what causes it and how best to avoid the circumstances that lead to a loss of momentum. Now is the moment! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Why we lose momentum and how to avoid it: 1. Lack of goals and poor prioritization Nothing is more dangerous to our momentum than not having a sharp vision on what we want to accomplish and clarity on exactly what we need to execute on to accomplish it. Often, we find ourselves easily distracted, off target and working on urgent but not necessarily important items. By maintaining clear goals and emphasizing prioritization we can keep up our momentum for long periods of time. Avoid these triggers by regularly reviewing your goals and reviewing your priorities. We strongly encourage you to have annual (or greater) goals and priorities broken down by quarter, then by month, then by week and finally by day. It’s best to start with the bigger goals first (annual or greater) so that you retain focus on your greater vision for yourself and your business. 2. Burnout Burnout is very real and becoming more of an issue every year for professionals, especially in the United States. The millennial generation has even been described as ‘closet workaholics’ and is a great example of how we are unwilling to treat ourselves to vacations or truly step away from work. The challenge is without balance and without a chance to rest is it hurts us more than it helps us. Pushing ourselves to operate daily at 100% with no opportunity to step away is like revving an engine to the red and never shifting gears or taking your foot off the gas. It’s simply a recipe for disaster. To avoid burnout, we recommend maintaining a health work-life balance and prioritizing self-care. This means that when you create your priorities and goals in the first step you include self-care and personal time in your planning. It’s also helpful to review how and where you can either automate, delegate or outsource so you’re doing less and focusing your attention on the most important tasks and not just keeping busy. 3. Perfectionism Perfectionism is impossible but it doesn’t stop many of us striving towards it. Perfectionism and, also fear of failure can lead to procrastination or filling up time we wouldn’t otherwise fill up. One of the greatest ways to lose momentum is to self-sabotage by trying to be perfect. Perfection is one of the greatest stall tactics and destroys momentum. To avoid perfection, or fear of failure, remember that it is both unattainable and unnecessary. Focus on improvement, experimentation and execution and strive for greatness and mastery, not for perfection. Do this and you’ll be able to maintain serious momentum for good! Maintain Momentum by Writing Down Your Why

Momentum is an incredible thing. It makes achieving our goals easy! Seriously, who struggles to do something they are excited and passionate about? Absolutely no one, that’s who! When we struggle is at the point that we lose our passion and excitement. When we get knocked off track, our momentum is halted and we have to force ourselves to continue. That’s when grit kicks in. Grit is great but we prefer not to have to rely on grit until we absolutely must. We’d rather maintain momentum. If you want to maintain momentum one of the best ideas is to write down your ‘why’ and have it in front of you. Before you grab your pen and paper… did you know that 70% of businesses will fail? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Why Write It Pen to paper remains one of the most effective ways for many of us to solidify something in memory. By writing down our why we’re forced not only to physically do something, but we also need to put thought into what we’re really trying to say. This practice forces us to really dig into our why and get to the true core of what’s important to us. What Having It in Front of You Does We’re going to lose steam. This is not an if, it’s a when. When we do, by having our ‘why’ immediately accessible and in front of us is going to be a trigger that brings us back to some of our original passion, excitement, and discomfort. All 3 of these emotions are great kick starters to taking action and regaining our momentum. It Creates Forced Perspective One of the most difficult challenges with goals is it can often feel like we’re not making progress. Having our why in front of us regularly forces us to take a look at what we’ve done. It drags our mind back through the work and the gains and the steps we have taken. In other words, it forces us to create perspective and get out of the mindset that we aren’t making progress. This is a powerful tool. Do you write down your ‘why’? How to Execute a Plan and Why it’s so Hard to do!

Big goals for 2023, am I right?! Most people don’t set small goals. After all, small goals don’t exactly feel like they will be life altering and exciting. Small goals certainly don’t equate to feeling like you won the lottery. When we develop big goals, the next step is to put a plan in place. Unfortunately, most people are terrible at executing on their plans and implementing them. In this blog we’ll share with you some tips on the best way to execute on a plan and why it’s so hard to do. 6 Methods To Make Sure Your Business Doesn’t Fail Before making any more plans, did you know that 70% of businesses will fail? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you and you can access it right here. Why is it so hard to execute on a plan Consistency and default behaviors are why we struggle here. Most of us fail to be consistent and this is a top reason why we can’t execute on our plans. Life happens and our consistency goes out the door. What’s really happening here is we are reverting to our default behaviors. Our brains don’t ever forget our defaults. They stay in the back of our minds, lurking and waiting like some creeper. When we get off track it’s natural for our brains to trigger our default modes and behaviors. Just like that, our plan can get off track. Since this is totally natural and impossible to eliminate, it’s very difficult to execute on a plan. Plan Execution, Tip 1 Review the actions that will help you achieve your plan. The only way to manage to our brains defaults is to be aware of when we start to go back to our old modalities and behaviors. The best way to keep up our defense is to review and stay hyper aware of what we need to do to execute on our plan. This means, constant and, yes, consistent review of our days to make sure we are staying on track. A compass works a lot better if we use it every day instead of every few weeks or months! Plan Execution, Tip 2 Embrace the boring. Yes, you read that right. A lot of the time, plan execution requires us to focus on basic and repetitive tasks. While most of us don’t thrive on repeating the same things over and over again with excellence, time and again history has proven that those of us that work the basics the best are the most likely to execute on achieving our larger plans and goals. Watch on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alemoct89ys&t=261s Working for a Fortune 50 employer gave me unique insight into culture and trust at one of the largest institutions in the world. Our specific business accounted for over 20% of the revenue earned by our company and we played an instrumental role in the success of our company. Some of the greatest lessons I learned during my tenure was around trust. How to both earn it and how to lose it. Let’s jump into some easy steps on how to earn and develop trust, right now. 1. Start communicating more People begin to trust when their expectations are met. It’s incredibly hard to meet expectations if you do not communicate what the expectations should be! For most of us, what feels like acceptable communication is probably under communication for our clients and over communication is acceptable. Remember, what seems obvious to you is probably not understood by your clients or your employees unless you outright say it to them. 2. Be consistent Uncertainty kills trust and people love certainty. One of the simplest ways to build trust right now is to start getting more consistent. Find ways you can create a process, system or SOP and implement it for yourself and your team. The consistency will lead to consistent results which will lead to trust. It’s one of the reasons Starbucks is such a successful model! 3. Get more vulnerable Your human and your success is built on selling yourself. People want to see the person behind the business. Vulnerability must be the most authentic, raw and instantly impactful to show the person behind the business. Nobody likes to do it, but everyone else loves to see it. After all, how much do people pay for inside access? It’s a proven business model to instantly start building more trust. There are a number of other simple steps can we take to build trust. Tips For Setting Expectations and Consistent Communication

Go to Disney World and expect magic! Travel to Rome and expect history. Go to an Apple store and expect white, clean tables and crisp technology. The common thread here? We have our expectations set up front. Here are some of the best tips to make sure that you are setting expectations correctly and consistently communicating to your clients and prospects. Expectations are everywhere. Meeting expectations leads to good feelings. We’re comforted that what we anticipated was what we experienced. There is comfort in familiarity and when we have an expectation in our minds, we become familiar with an idea. If that idea, that reality that we are creating in our heads comes to be, we end up being happy! When we exceed expectations and it’s even better than we expected, that’s how you convert people into advocates, raving fans. If you’re a business owner or professional that is trying to refine or even develop your client experience, this article is going to help you identify some top methods you can set expectations and deliver the very best client experiences. Before going any further, did you know that 70% of businesses will fail? We put together an absolutely FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our gift to you absolutely free and you can access it right here. In our most recent podcast, Release The (Snappy) Kraken, featuring Greg Drozdow, we take a candid look at communication with our clients and prospects. Greg, like so many of us, is working towards providing the very best consumer experience. We encourage you to listen if you’d like to learn how he’s helping other professionals implement better, consistent, communication to their clients to deliver outstanding experiences. You can listen in here! Tip #1: Let Everyone Know When we know something really well, it’s easy to forget that other people might not. This happens in our businesses too! It’s very easy for us to say, hey, this is how we do things (and you can likely throw in an eye roll, duh, obviously, and so on)…the thing is, for something we are so close to, most people are not. By letting all of your clients and prospects know up front exactly what you will provide and how you will provide it you are creating a very clear roadmap. They’ll appreciate this since they won’t have to put any thought into their expectations, they are being relayed up front. Tip #2: Remind People Most of us are poor listeners and we’re distracted. Often, overwhelmed, rarely focused and usually doing our best to multi-task. You can be certain that most people won’t hear something you say until you say it about 5-7 times. We’ve been doing this a long time and the evidence always brings us back to the same results. If you are not consistently reminding people of the expectations and are not clear in this with your communication, often, they will either not hear you or immediately forget. Make sure your process is set up to remind people throughout the entire process on the what and how. Tip # 3: Do exactly what you say you’re going to do…or MORE People today are so overwhelmed by poor service, poorly set expectations and little to no communication that by simply doing as you say will you set you apart tremendously from the competition. The key is to NEVER, NEVER EVER, over promise on your expectations. We rarely use the word NEVER here in the Lab, in this instance, we do. The biggest mistake people make is not failing to set an expectation, it’s failing to keep to the expectation. Keep to your expectation and/or exceed it and you’ll have very happy clients. Tip #4: Overcommunicate, unless your clients tell you not to Yes, we want you to overcommunicate. That doesn’t mean that we want you to blab on. Nor does it mean we believe you should annoy your prospects or clients. What it does mean is that it’s better to start off with more than less. People will let you know if you’re too much. If they do and you tone it down, it means you heard them and listened. People like that. People will not very often tell you if you’re too little. Instead you’re much more likely to have them simply walk away because you already failed to meet an expectation that they had set in their minds. Tip #5: Be consistent People like things they are familiar with and consistency breeds familiarity. Why do you think so many people enjoy Starbucks or McDonalds? Familiar is comfortable and comfortable is comforting. People do business with people they like. Make people feel good by being consistent. By following these 5 tips you’ll find yourself delivering the very best client experiences. You’ll become proficient, if not an expert at setting expectations and you’ll pave the road for a clear, repeatable, and consistent experience for your clients. By doing this you’ll step up your game, and level up your communication and deliverables for your clients and prospects. If you’re working to develop consistency and set expectations or want to master this skill even more, we can help.
