How to quickly ID distractions

It’s understandable to get distracted. Most distractions either come in the form of something incredibly urgent or in the shape of an amazing opportunity. So why wouldn’t we be drawn to something that is screaming danger or tantalizing us with its value. Yet, as is often the case, when we lose focus of our priorities it ends up causing more problems than it solves for and it’s why it’s so important to be able to quickly ID when something is a distraction. Concerned about other aspects of your business? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s take a closer look at how we can quickly identify distractions so we more effectively manage them. Is it relevant? If the task isn’t directly helping you to accomplish your goals, why are you doing it? Unless you are seriously considering shifting what your goals and focus is, if the task doesn’t support the end goals in mind it may just be a distraction. How does it impact the rest of your schedule? Is this pulling me away from my planned time and day? If so, consider carefully the greater impact of the task you’re considering. Is it worth the time, energy and effort or should you stick to what you had on your agenda before it popped up. Why this task? We’re amazingly good at finding reasons not to do the things we don’t like doing. Anytime something comes up, do a gut check and ask yourself if you’re considering this as a time spend because it’s a priority or simply because it may be more enjoyable than the work you should be doing and need to be  doing. It’s not always easy to identify distractions but if it passes the gut check, furthers your bigger objectives and goals and is more valuable time spent versus what you originally had scheduled than safe to say it isn’t a distraction. However, if you’re failing one or more of the above identifiers you may want to wait on the activity to see if it really is something you should be doing. How do you identify distractions? 3 Reasons to join an Owner Advisory Board

Owners face a myriad of challenges in business today with some common challenges that impact nearly every business owner. In particular there are 3 challenges nearly every business owner faces during their business journey and the way a business owner faces these challenges has serious implications for the future viability of their business. In this blog we’ll take a look at these 3 challenges and the reasons an owner would want to join an owner advisory board to mitigate or eliminate the risk from these challenges. Are you concerned about your business? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s take a look at the first major challenge many business owners face. ⅔ of Owners cite ISOLATION as a challenge Many business owners feel that they are on an island and don’t have anyone they can turn to for advice. Spouses and partners? Don’t generally understand the business. Financial advisors, accountants and attorneys? Sure they are in touch 1-2x a year but aren’t intimately familiar with the management of the company. Who else do business owners have? Generally speaking, most business owners will make decisions on their own without the support and perspective of outside, objective advice givers. With that decision making comes serious stress and anxiety. Owner advisory boards can eliminate isolation by giving owners a forum to open up about their business with trusted advisors that do develop an intimate understanding of the business. This can not only improve decision making, it can also reduce stress levels and increase overall well being for the business owner. 50% of Owners experience OVERLOAD If you’re like half the business owners out there today, you may feel like you’re being pulled in a hundred directions at once, while juggling and maybe even spinning some plates for good measure. Overload is especially true in today’s ultra competitive environment and is exacerbated when we have struggles with employee retention and company culture. Overload leads to burnout, mistakes and it’s own set of health issues for owners. Owner advisory boards provide unique perspectives from owners that are in or have conquered similar challenges. Learning from the mistakes they made and gaining insight from other owner’s wisdom can help reduce the amount of overload you feel as a business owner today. There’s an added benefit too. Owner advisory boards that are well designed provide exceptional clarity around mid and long term business intention reducing the amount of time spent on items that do not drive the greater vision of the business. We don’t know what we don’t know Any honest business owner will admit they were hit by a curve ball or two since they started their business. For many owners, there’s a lot more than one or two of these while a business is in operation. The savviest business owners are aware that the scariest parts of business is what they don’t know they don’t know. Balancing business with the rest of our lives can feel like walking a tightrope at times. Having something completely unexpected hit you while you’re on a tightrope is the worst possible thing that can happen. Owner advisory boards offer a way for other business owners to share perspective that can illuminate and open our eyes to some of what we didn’t know we didn’t know! While business owners face a number of challenges that extend well beyond the 3 mentioned here, each of these challenges offers an incredible opportunity for owners to stand up and overcome. Utilization of a board of advisors is like having an expert set of trainers preparing you to address these challenges head on. If you’re looking for reasons to join a board look no further than this: improved decision making, reduced overload and elimination of blindspots with a bonus heaping of an overall better mental and physical wellbeing! How do you address these challenges? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! 3 challenges that make business owners feel like they have ADHD

3 challenges that make business owners feel like they have ADHD

Nearly 5% of children and adults struggle with ADHD. While nobody knows the cause of ADHD the symptoms can range from being unable to concentrate on tasks to hasty decision making and numerous others. ADHD is a serious mental health issue that we are in no way minimizing. Our goal is to compare how business owners may struggle with similar challenges that are commonly experienced by individuals with ADHD and to draw attention to the complex mental wellness challenges that individuals and owners face. Do you struggle at times in your business? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our gift to you and you can access it right here. Access it here! Trouble Focusing Many business owners struggle to focus on the most important priorities in their business. Business owners with busy schedules and multiple projects may find themselves flipping between activities and projects frequently without often stopping to consider the importance and urgency of each task and project. When struggling with focus it’s important to carve out time to properly plan and prioritize. Find a quiet place to review all of the moving pieces. If you struggle to do this on your own it can be helpful to bring on an outside coach or consultant to help with the work. Impulsivity Impulse control can be something that many individuals struggle with and business owners are no different. Whether it’s hiring, investing resources, or launching new products it’s easy to ‘chase the squirrel’ AKA fall victim to distractions from your primary goals. To minimize impulsivity in business it may make sense to have a detailed business plan to fall back on or a board of advisors to help you identify when you are straying from your original intentions. Organization Staying organized, remembering appointments and deadlines, keeping neat workspaces free of clutter can be a serious struggle for owners. We strongly recommend outsourcing, delegating and automating whenever possible to minimize the impact of struggling with organization. By implementing all 3 of these concepts into your business you can reduce some of the overload that business owners commonly experience and help remain better organized. How do you deal with some of these symptoms? Let us know your thoughts, you can email us at info@jbandthedoctor.com! The best personality traits for networking

Anyone can be a great networker. Regardless of whether you consider yourself an outgoing person or not, oftentimes the most effective people at networking aren’t natural extroverts or anything along those lines. Instead the best networkers show up at events with specific personality traits that they emphasize for the occasion. In this blog we’ll discuss the best personality traits for networking and we promise you these are traits you can develop with intention and practice! Want to know why people fail? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s take a look at what we consider the most important personality traits for networking. Confidence Confidence is critical to bring to any networking event. Most people are uncomfortable being in large groups of strangers. It makes us feel vulnerable and unsafe. Showing up to a networking event and exhibiting confidence is a surefire way to attract people to you that are feeling less confident and will seriously up your networking game. Establish confidence early by visualizing yourself having success at the networking event. Self-Awareness Many of us lack self-awareness and that can really hurt us at networking events. Self-awareness is not just about being aware of ourselves and our own feelings, it’s also about being aware of how others are perceiving us. If you want to display confidence and approachability it is crucial to be highly self-aware of how you’re showing up to other people. Get better at self-awareness by learning to recognize how people respond to different types of body language and communication. Active Listening The best personality trait for networking? Hard to say because any of the three of these listed are gold when it comes to excelling at networking. There is, however, a strong argument to be made that active listening is more important than any other personality trait when it comes to networking. Active listening means it’s not about you or your needs, it’s about really hearing the person in front of you. Do you know who is most likely to want to help you? The people that feel heard. So go out and hear them! To practice active listening make sure you focus on what someone is saying and not what you want to say. Pay attention, ask clarifying questions and really tune into the meaning behinds someone’s words.  What traits do you believe are most important for networking? 3 Clever ways to communicate value and drive more sales

3 Clever ways to communicate value and drive more sales

If sales is the heartbeat of every business then communicating value must be the heart itself. If we fail to communicate our value we’ll struggle to ever get our businesses off the ground or to grow them to the levels that we desire. Communicating value is an absolutely critical skill for business success. In this blog we’ll discuss 3 clever ways you can better communicate value and drive more sales. Does value matter to you? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Exclusivity People love being a part of something greater than themselves. People especially love being a part of something exclusive. When communicating your offering or services you can level up your sales with the clever technique of making something exclusive. This will naturally drive people to want to be a part of something and speak about it on your behalf too, after all, nobody wants to keep it a secret! Case Studies We are naturally drawn to stories because it allows us to feel what someone else is feeling and experience their journey first hand. Case studies are clever vehicles to create different profiles for different people that they can immediately resonate with. Case studies are like storytelling on steroids because you can cater different case studies specifically to the challenges and problems your clients have. A great case study will highlight the pain point that is specific to your client and allow you to really speak to what is bothering them most! Value Ladders Not everyone can afford your services or products, and that’s ok. But often people can afford and choose not to. An effective way to communicate your value is to offer multiple products and services on a ladder. The ladder starts with low cost solutions and increases to your highest cost offerings. By doing this you’ll offer you prospects flexibility and anchor your pricing to a high and low point! How do you communicate your value? Innovation in business: is it really necessary?

Innovation in business: is it really necessary?

When it comes to innovation in business it’s often a buzzword that’s thrown around along with descriptors such as critical, necessary, crucial etc. Yet, there is an argument to be made that innovation in business is not always necessary and in fact could be damaging! In this blog we’ll take a look at innovation in business and explore whether innovation is really necessary, or not. Do you need to innovate? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s explore when innovation is helpful and then we can explore when it’s not. Top instances innovation is helpful Innovation can be helpful for a wide range of reasons and can be a key component of long-term business success. However, there are two important drivers of innovation that are more important than the others. Long Term Survival Disruption is very real and it can completely resurface how businesses operate and we have seen plenty of examples of how very established business models failure is traced back to innovation and disruption; blockbuster & netflix, taxi’s and uber are just a couple of recent examples. Innovation can be essential for long-term survival in business today. Competitive Advantage Fast paced industries and businesses often require innovation to create a competitive advantage. It’s why we often see tech companies working furiously to develop new and innovative approaches to existing products and problems. Innovation is often a necessity to create competitive advantages today in these types of industries. Top instances innovation is unnecessary and (potentially) damaging For every business and industry where innovation is essential, there are other businesses and industries where innovation can hurt more than it helps. Here are two types of businesses where innovation may hurt more than it helps. Stable Market There are plenty of businesses and products where innovation simply isn’t all that necessary. Something as simple as the paper towel or toilet paper are great examples of stable markets that need and require little to no innovation. In fact, trying something new here is as liable to cost money as it is to make money. Risk With change comes risk and we do a disservice if we don’t consider that innovation can carry some serious risk. There are a number of examples where companies try to innovate and fail badly. Those innovation failures can lead to serious business losses and potentially catastrophic business consequences. The verdict: is innovation necessary? As the Doc likes to say with all things, it depends. There are businesses and industries where innovation is essential and there are circumstances that require businesses to innovate or fail. There are also plenty of instances where it doesn’t make sense for a business to innovate especially if the market is stable and lucrative. Ultimately the decision to innovate shouldn’t be automatic and, as with all decisions, it should be made carefully and with all due diligence. Does your business require innovation? Business lessons we can learn from the stage

Business lessons we can learn from the stage

Although business and the theater can feel like two totally different arenas there are tremendous lessons we can draw from the theater to business today. In this blog we have compiled a few of the best business lessons we can learn from the stage. It’s not like we staged this, you know! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Let’s jump right into some of our top business lessons we have learned from the stage! 1. Timing matters…a lot In theater, timing is essential to the success of a production. If timing is off it’s like the difference between a comedian telling a joke versus that one person you know. That’s the one, the one with the bad timing and they are the only one laughing at the end of the punchline. On stage, and in business timing is critical to success in our endeavors. 2. Preparation and rehearsal can’t be skipped One of the most common mistakes I see business people make is lack of preparation and rehearsal. In the theater, nobody dares to step onto stage without spending hours (usually hundreds) preparing for their scenes. Yet, in the business world it’s far too common for people to never spend any significant time preparing or rehearsing. Whether it’s for a product pitch or stepping in front of a room of people, preparation and rehearsal are must do’s for success in business. 3. The show must go on Life happens and we get it. In the theater, regardless of what happens, the show must go on! Actor sick, bring in the understudy. Lighting issues, missed cues, makeup snafus…they don’t matter individually relative to the production itself. Business is similar. We need to be resilient and recognize that obstacles are inevitable. It’s our mindset that matters here and it’s one of the most important lessons that we can take from the stage. Our business must go on. Want more lessons from the stage? Key elements in storytelling

Key elements in storytelling

Mastering the art of storytelling does not come naturally to many people. Thankfully there are some common elements that are universal in most good stories. These same elements can be incorporated to provide your business and brand with the ‘wow’ factor that you need to stand apart! Want to be the hero in your story and not the side story? We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Le’ts jump right into what makes storytelling great and the elements you need to include in your story. What makes storytelling great? Storytelling allows us to create an emotional response in the people who are experiencing our story. It engages and captivates the audience by evoking emotions and touching on universal themes that everyone can identify with. A good story will resonate with people over time and never truly ages. Key Element #1: Conflict There is no good story without conflict. No matter how small, conflict is something all of us can appreciate and have gone through. Every story must have a conflict and the better the conflict the more engaging the story. Key Element #2: Resolution Not all conflicts are won but there are always resolutions. The resolution of a conflict provides insight and helps guide our future decisions. The wisdom in many stories is found in how the conflict was resolved. Key Element #3: Character In order for a story to hit, somebody has to place themselves in the shoes of the character. A great story will always have a character that people can relate to in some way and allows them to imagine themselves going through the conflict as the character themselves. Building out these elements in your story will help you engage with your audience in a more meaningful way and truly stand apart from the crowd! How do you tell stories? Supercharge retention by creating greater engagement in education

When we educate ourselves or someone else, one of the most critical indicators of success will be retention. How long and well do we keep the information we learned? Today, we recognize that higher levels of engagement directly correlate with increased retention and make our efforts at educating ourselves or others significantly more effective. In today’s blog we’ll explore how you can create greater engagement in education to drive incredible retention! You may want to engage with this! We put together a FREE guide identifying the Top 6 reasons businesses fail and give you actionable steps you can take on every one of these to make sure it’s your competition failing and not you! It’s our free gift to you. Access it here! Le’ts take a look at how we can create greater engagement in education. Offer Choice and Learning Pathways Much of education has been constructed by the hands of the teacher and often students are left with a model they must follow. By offering choice and learning pathways you can provide options to students on specific lessons they can learn within broader topics. Allowing for students to choose how they will demonstrate their knowledge also provides them with more excitement and enjoyment as they engage with the material. Emphasize Growth Mindsets Failure is ingrained in us as a bad thing. Yet some of the very best learning tends to be driven from failures and mistakes. Emphasizing a growth mindset means that we can and should embrace failure in what we do! Plan and build out exercises where failure is expected at least half the time and celebrated at the same level success is celebrated. Incorporate Active Learning There are many types of learning styles and rather than wax poetic on the various learning methods that are widely used and accepted we’ll instead focus our attention on active learning. Active learning can mean many things and typically will include, group projects, collaboration, interactive discussions and hands-on activities. By integrating this type of learning into traditional lesson planning we can greatly increase engagement across many different types of people and dramatically improve retention. By implementing some of the suggestions above you’ll create much greater engagement whether it’s in your own individual learning or any education you’re offering to others. The best benefit of creating more engagement is you will supercharge retention for anyone involved in the learning process! How do you increase engagement?
