There are a number of ways we can self-sabotage our productivity. Most of the time we do this without even realizing we’re hurting ourselves more than helping. The path to hell is paved with good intentions, so they say. Let’s review two common ways we kill our productivity and how to overcome them.
We Ignore Optimism Bias
Optimism bias is the idea that we are better and faster at everything we do than we are. Optimism bias fall under lack of self-awareness and can have some nasty consequences. Optimism bias will have us take on more than we’re capable of and cause us to over schedule. To avoid optimism bias there is a simple hack we can utilize; for anything you commit to add 20% to the length of time you expect it will take. For example, let’s say we book a 60-minute meeting, we can expect to need 72 minutes to have a successful meeting. Doing this will leave room for meetings that run long, follow up, note taking etc.
We Fail to Plan
Prioritizing is more than just a to-do list. Prioritizing requires planning. For most of us planning is one of the first things we cut short when they begin to feel the pressure of time and deadlines. Yet planning will allow us to focus on what’s truly important. The next time you feel like you don’t have enough time, instead of cutting your planning, zero in on your planning and figure out what the real priorities are. By achieving our priorities and cutting out what isn’t we can exponentially increase our productivity.
